DESCRIPTION - ACCEPTED STUDENTS CATEGORIES: Earthquake Engineering is a relatively new multidisciplinary and constantly evolving science encompassing structural analysis and design, computational methods and material science, both in a deterministic and stochastic context. This evolution of theoretical models, design procedures and construction technologies has evolved through and thanks to, the knowledge gained by observed structural performance in past devastating earthquakes worldwide. High quality training and education of professionals and researchers, in the field of analysis and design of earthquake resistant structures, is of paramount importance in reducing the seismic risk in earthquake vulnerable regions.
Greece, being situated in the region where the African plate is subducting under the Eurasian plate, has the largest seismic energy release per sq. km compared to all other European countries.
At the same time, Greece also has a long cultural recorded history of past damaging earthquakes in the region. As a consequence, seismic awareness and considerable experience are established among Greek structural engineers, who have adopted seismic design rules and advanced dynamic analysis practices since 1959.
This demand for high quality training and education in the field of Earthquake Engineering has a strong impact on the content of both undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the School of Civil Engineering, NTUA, as it is evident by the number of compulsory and elective courses given on the subject and is reflected in the theoretical and practical competence of its faculty members.
